Writing

Travel writing

From 2004-2012, I wrote about travel exclusively for Frommers.com, which led to many other assignments working on guidebooks, editing business-to-business projects, and co-authoring the Frommer’s Guide to Philadelphia and the Amish Country (2011). For many years, on the first Monday of every month, Frommer’s published the Global Price Index. From 2004-2011, in the course of working on this index, I’ve seen the dollar go up and down and back again. In short, I learned a TON about the world just through this one column. Every Monday, Frommer’s published the smart deal of the week, which I also wrote. I also regularly compiled slideshows on a number of things; many of these pieces garnered top traffic numbers and were picked up by Yahoo!, too. Some of my favorites include best yoga vacations and rooms with a view. I also regularly wrote deal-driven slideshows, like this one for Memorial Day packages.

Food Writing, Local Writing, and More

You can also find my work about the Lehigh Valley in Laini’s Little Pocket Guide, where I write the column “Five Cool..” and I serve as the online editor. For Lehigh Valley Style, I write the “Inside Dish” column every other month, profiling restaurants and chefs, and have written features on Allentown and the beer culture in the Lehigh Valley.

In the past year or so, I have started to do more recipe testing work, mostly with cookbook author Dave Joachim. Last year, I helped him test dozens of chef-driven recipes for Jeff Michaud’s Eating Italy. Currently, I am helping Joachim test recipes for Marc Vetri’s Mastering Pasta. In tandem with that, in 2012 I started working on my own cookbook, a collection of recipes inspired by and gleaned from the Lehigh Valley Farmers’ Markets. You can read more about that here.

One of the things I’m passionate about is where I live. Some ten or so years ago, I moved here from New York City. At the time it wasn’t what I had planned or expected, but I’ve met some of the most incredibly soulful, smart, and creative people here that you’ll meet anywhere. If you want to read more, check out this story I wrote, called Why I Live Here. It’s something I’m really proud of and I literally wrote it in about 1/2 hour.

This is just a small sampling of what I’ve been doing in the past couple of years. More than 15 years ago, I started off as a music writer and critic, and that led to all kinds of cultural writing about art, photography, architecture, food, travel, beer, wine, you name it. I love when things intersect and inform each other. And when they are delicious? That’s even better.
