Writing

I am currently working on a book about women in rock for Greenwood Press, to be published in 2008. In addition to teaching I am also a freelance cultural writer and critic who has written about travel, food, music, art, photography, and more. I've interviewed Moby, cookbook author Nigella Lawson, the CEO of Martin Guitar, glass artist Dale Chihuly, Duncan Sheik, and dozens of other artists of different styles and genres. My travel writing regularly appears on the Frommer's web site and I have written for numerous national and local publications, in print and online, including Performing Songwriter, Paste, The Village Voice, Spin.com and Sonicnet.com (now defunct) and Tracks (also, sadly, defunct).

Although I started out with the intent of becoming just a music journalist, I found other things that grabbed my interest around the way. Primarily, I identify myself as a music journalist, but I am really a cultural writer--it is the lens through which I see the world and the place where many issues and interests interact.

Here are some samples of my work:

Editing

Most recently, I have worked as an editor for a regional magazine called Lehigh Valley magazine, starting as an associate editor and then managing editor. I was responsible for myriad tasks, from assigning stories and editing them to overseeing fact checking and working with the art director and our chief photographer, Ryan Hulvat, who was responsible for the consistently excellent images in the magazine.

Prior to working at Lehigh Valley, I spent time working in research at US Weekly, and women's health book publishing at Rodale, along with stints at the now-defunct men's upscale magazine, Icon. I read quickly and can line edit as well as edit for content. While I was in graduate school at NYU, I assisted with research, proofreading, and overall editorial feedback for Mary Quigley and Loretta Kaufman's 2000 book, And What Do You Do? When Women Choose to Stay at Home.
